Dominique Rizzo – Incubator Mentor – 2020

Dominique Rizzo is one of Queensland’s leading female chefs creating world class bespoke “Gourmet Food & Wine Tours” to Spain, Sicily and beyond.

Her mission is to inspire everyone to make a change for the better with her delicious, healthy, real food recipes…..I love the essence of clean, simple whole food cooking. My food style and recipes are inspired by my travels and culinary experience in all cuisines. Life is too short to leave anything out! I am passionate and inspired by our world’s multicultural kitchen and all dietary lifestyle choices. I believe that with balance in our body we are whole and healthy

Most importantly embracing over 30 years in the hospitality industry, and over 20 years’ experience as a chef and restaurateur, Dominique has established herself as a well-known Food Advocate and Chef in Australia.  For instance, through her public speaking, cooking classes, cooking presentations and demonstrations, Dominique is able to share her abundant knowledge around Australia. Likewise, with her recipe writing, food styling, radio, magazine and Television work.  Dominique focuses not only on her true passion for Italian and Sicilian food culture, most importantly she also incorporates an emphasis on all cuisines celebrating Australia’s amazing melting pot of a multicultural kitchen. Her media experience spans for over 17 years’ working in Australian television and radio.  Dominique has also hosted and presented on a number of cooking programmes with new television adventure to launch in 2020.

After selling her very successful cafe/restaurant Putia Pure Food Kitchen, School and Pantry in October 2019.  Due to popular demand, Dominique has relaunched her sell-out cookbook “My Taste of Sicily” showcasing a beautiful collection of delicious family-friendly Italian inspired recipes. More importantly highlighting her passion for fresh healthy cooking and her Sicilian heritage. She is currently working on a series of “Pure Food Cooking” books aimed for the regular household cook and featuring simple, healthy recipes and foods for the whole family. In 2020 Dominique launches her latest project, “The Urban Feast Cooking School” bringing a real splash of the Mediterranean to Brisbane’s Northside. Featuring 2 kitchens including an alfresco kitchen with wood-fired pizza oven, bbq, smoker and after all that cooking, a typical dining experience under the grapevines. This is certainly going to be a popular place where Dominique brings all her travelling food inspiration into fruition.

Food Tours & Travel Experiences

As a result, for her love of travel and discovery, Dominique launched her Food Tours 7 years ago. Subsequently out of a desire to create Chef-inspired bespoke itineraries for the thinking traveller. Her Food Tours are the culmination of years of travel, research and relationships which now take her and her clients to Sicily and surrounding Islands, Puglia, Spain, Sardinia and Corsica. She is also offering  Women Only Tours scheduled for Morocco and Holistic Relaxing and Rejuvenating Tours to  Norfolk Island on the near horizon.  Dominique’s Food Tours are a focus on hospitality, quality, personalised service and uniqueness.  Above all her Food Tours are created for the busy traveller who desire something more out of their travel itinerary.  With small groups from 10 – 12 people, bespoke itineraries, luxury accommodation and your own private chef for the duration of the tour, Dominique’s Food Tours are definitely something different for all travel lovers.

Where did you grow up?

Brisbane, Australia

Given the choice between living in the city or country which would you choose and why?

I would choose the country as I have always loved the country, the air, trees, the land, farming, animals, growing my own produce, country community and the thought of being a little more self-sufficient.

Describe your area of expertise?  Self-employed / solopreneur – I’m an ideas woman, practical and experienced in the field of cooking / food/ hospitality / travel / menu development/ self-employed in hospitality whilst also very experienced in developing multifaceted business models and self-diversification

What are you looking forward to most about participating in the Norfolk Island Incubator Programme? Being able to assist/inspire someone else in a similar field to help them grow their business and fulfill their dreams and themselves to their full potential.

What wisdom or knowledge do you hope to share with the participants? The wisdom of my own experiences in small business/ self employed and the advantages of having the freedom to have a flexible business model

What is the greatest hurdle you have had to overcome in your career and how did you do it?  My own mental thought process – the more I challenged myself in diversifying into different areas, the more faith and belief I gained in myself and what I can and have achieved. My thought process now is the world is my oyster, there is nothing I cannot do or achieve.

If you could solve one problem or issue what would it be?  World hunger.

What advice would you give your younger self?  You are an amazing, talented woman, don’t worry about anything as everything will fall into place and your desires in life and work will find their way to you – just be your amazing self.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why? All my deceased relatives as they have all been self employed and in the hospitality industry and I would love to find out their stories to discover the drive I have obviously inherited.

Best advice you have been given? The world is your oyster, you can have anything you want… go out and make it happen.
