Q & A – Norfolk Incubator Program – 2020
Where did you grow up?
On a farm near a tiny place called Wirrinya. Forbes was our closest town so I guess, Forbes.
Given the choice between living in the city or country which would you choose and why?
Oooh, that’s tough. I love elements of both. And I think unless you have lived in both, it’s hard to truly say. I think I have the best of both worlds, I now live in Sydney by the beach for my nature hit, and then I get to visit my parents who live in the country.
I’m happy as long as I have access to nature, good people, fresh produce and a great coffee!
Describe your area of expertise?
Wellness, Wellness tourism on one hand, and then Media, design and digital marketing on the other.
I combine both passions to have a wellness media company promoting a healthy lifestyle through print, digital and real life experiences.
What are you looking forward to most about participating in the Norfolk Island Incubator Programme?
Getting to connect with the wonderful people on Norfolk Island and help them grow their business or business idea.
What wisdom or knowledge do you hope to share with the participants?
I hope to motivate them to follow their heart. Yes, change, different ideas, trying something new can be scary. I hope I can inspire and support those to trust their idea and give it a red hot go!
What is the greatest hurdle you have had to overcome in your career and how did you do it?
Pivoting my business during the GFC back in 2008. I had to go from being primary offline to online. A massive learning curve and a whole new direction. If I wasn’t open to change and learning, I would not be where I am today. I truly believe good can come from bad.
If you could solve one problem or issue what would it be?
Just one??? I would love it if everyone valued their health. Can you imagine the money that this would save the public health system and national budget. Almost all illness is lifestyle related, and therefore avoided. Yet for some reason, people don’t give their health priority, I’d love to solve that. Not only would it save a lot of money, can you imagine the quality of life people would have without suffering an avoidable illness?
What advice would you give your younger self?
Failing is important. It is through failing you get a second chance to have another shot, only without the mistakes. And surround yourself with good people.
If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?
I’ve been blessed to have had time with incredible people (leaders, business people, Dalai Lama) and while that is rewarding and enlightening, I would love to have a family dinner with my parents, Grandparents (who have passed) brothers, sisters, and all my aunts and uncles…. recreate the Christmases we had when I was a kid so …
- my children can experience those fun times, and
- appreciate family when I possibly didn’t. Now we are older, busier, those gatherings are a thing of the past
Best advice you have been given?
You can’t be an expert in everything, you just need to know someone who is an expert in the area you need.
What are you looking forward to most about participating in the Norfolk Island Incubator Program?
Spending time with the wonderful people on Norfolk Island and supporting them with ideas and inspiration for their business.
