Norfolk Island is an external Australian territory in the Pacific Ocean about 1600 km northeast of Sydney. Norfolk Island is one of Australia’s most isolated communities and one of its oldest territories, having been settled six weeks after Australia’s founding settlement at Sydney, New South Wales.
Norfolk Island has a diverse environment and notable historic sites offering a unique heritage seldom found elsewhere within Australia and around the world. This remote island is also of major biological importance with many native species being unique to the island.
The main language on Norfolk Island is English, but some Norfolk Islanders speak the local language Norf’k which is a mix of Tahitian and Old English from the Bounty descendants.
